The drawing model in AutoCAD contains various shapes that are created or manipulated. These include rectangles, arcs, ellipses, splines, circles, and so forth. The drawing model provides a geometric framework that is used to draw precise objects. Additional components of the drawing model are used to set the drawing to a selected coordinate system, to set the orientation of objects within the drawing model, to apply a variety of symbols to an object, to create a font, to color objects, and to edit properties of objects.

The drawing model and some drawing components can be edited, or changed, directly on the drawing screen. Other components are edited using a component palette or a component selector window. Some of these components include shadings, linetypes, and raster effects. Some drawing objects, such as fillets, bevels, and so forth, are added to the drawing model with a component palette.

Other components, such as symbols, are added to the drawing model by dragging a symbol from the component palette and dropping it on the drawing screen. When symbols are dropped onto a screen, they are automatically associated with a command that will later be used to place them on the screen. For example, a symbol for the letter “e” can be associated with the command “E” on the screen. This command is invoked to add the symbol for the letter “e” to the drawing, and automatically places the symbol on the screen.

When symbols are placed on the screen by using a command, it is necessary to specify the distance that the symbol will be placed from the last object drawn. In order to do this, a graphic style known as a “leader” is used. A leader applies a new setting to the symbol’s current coordinate system, so that the leader applies its current setting
