There’s an interesting study in Europe, in which researchers tracked the physical activity of 16-year-olds for a full four years. It has been published in the European Heart Journal, but its findings have been covered by the New York Times.
The finding: There was a strong, positive correlation between physical activity and scores on standard tests that measure physical fitness. The kids who were more physically active also scored higher on the fitness tests than the kids who were less active.
Other research has suggested that people who are more physically active are also more likely to be more emotionally stable. That’s an important finding because it implies that people who are less physically active are more likely to experience high levels of anxiety, depression and other negative emotions.
I’m wondering if these studies are in fact different versions of the same question:
When it comes to mood and wellbeing, which of these things is more important, or at least more important than the other: physical activity or emotional stability?
It’s pretty obvious that the kids who were less physically active were more likely to be anxious, depressed, and prone to behavioral problems. And it’s also pretty obvious that the kids who were less emotionally stable were more likely to have lower levels of physical activity.
So if you were wondering which of these two things is more important for health, it looks like it’s the former:
The kids who were less physically active were more likely to experience high levels of negative emotions, while the kids who were more physically active had more stable emotions.
In other words:
The act of being physically active is healthier than having stable emotional states.
